Please can someone advise me on DC generator?

I understand that there are either series, compound or shunt wound generators. Please can someone advise me what is meant by the field winding on the generator. This is for a college assignment...

gc-p gave you a good starting place. There are entire books (text books) devoted to the study of DC machines. You could write a masters thesis on the design of these machines.
