The engineering industry continues to display promising employment trends despite being in the cusp of the recession. During August 2009 opportunities for UK jobs in engineering continue to rise, especially within then Utilities and Rail sectors.

Engineering jobs in the Utility sector have been one of the key influences for the growth in job opportunities in the engineering industry. Firms such as Liverpool based water company United Utilities have contribute to the growth of engineering jobs in the UK, with prospective plans to line 350 meters of sewer tunnels in Merseyside.

In addition to engineering jobs in Liverpool, the north-east of England maintains a strong position in producing jobs in engineering . It was announced that a new renewable energy plant will be created in Newcastle by Vertical Winde Energy a Northern-Ireland based energy firm. The plans for the new renewable energy plant will consist of a micro wind power generated system, which will undoubtedly generate a boost of employment opportunities in engineering for the people of Newcastle.

In addition to the promising growth of engineering jobs , the continued expansion of rail firm Network Rail is also contributing to the number of new engineering job opportunities in the UK, with the complex and specialized redevelopment of London’s Blackfriars station.

However, the growth of jobs in the engineering industry has also been marred with the closure of engineering company Schlumberge, which will see 69 redundancies.

It is obvious to say there have been a number of casualties in the engineering industry due to the recession. However, despite these losses, the engineering industry as a whole continues to show signs of resilience. The overall outlook remains upbeat and optimistic. Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s visit to Scotland to greet member companies of Scottish Engineering emphasized the encouraging signs for the continued growth of the engineering industry.
