  1. I needed a big composter to cope with chicken bedding and boy is this big. I am 5’4″ and this thing comes up to my shoulder.

It arrived in a big box and was quite difficult to remove. I ended up putting it flat and cutting down the sides.

I built this thing alone and it was not easy. Took about 45 minutes. Some of the plastic lips that join the edges had snapped off, I couldn’t be bothered returning the product so just worked around it. By the time I had got to fitting the roof my back was hurting and I was swearing quite a bit.

The lid does not fit very well and the “lock” does not work at all. I will need to secure this with a bungee cord. Although there is no obvious hole from which I can secure the hook. Perhaps I will tightly wrap a cord around the body (will help with the broken joins) and bring one down from the lid.

I cannot comment on the composting action as that is just beginning today. I think it will work and I like the idea of not having to stir the compost.

  2. I received the composter in 1 day and it took less than 1/2 an hour to put together. Looking forward to experiencing the results!

  3. I find it difficult to find polite words to describe what a useless piece of plastic junk this composter is. In theory, this was a good idea, and I suppose if it were made from strong enough material, it would be too costly. In reality, it is flimsy, wobbly, and wants to fall apart as you start loading it. Then, in fact, it does fall apart as you attempt to move the waste down from one level to the next and the shelf collapses as the thin plastic structure bulges or changes shape from the weight of a few weeks of kitchen scraps and some grass clippings. I could have spent half as much money and built a good one from stock wood from any lumber yard/ home center.

  4. The Earthmaker Aerobic Composter is pretty easy to assemble, although I would recommend two people to make it even easier. There are ample instructions not only for assembly but for composting in general and for this device specifically. We just started using the Composter, but so far it is remarkably convenient to use.

  5. I bought this composter because it was advertised as a trouble free, simple system. The only thing that is simple about it is that it simply doesn’t work. Don’t waste your money. This is an expensive piece of junk. I’ve been putting my organic waste in it for over a year and I’ve yet to yield any reasonable compost. I’d rather keep a garbage pile in my back yard and let it rot for free. It is falling apart after only a year. Go for the 3 bin system and do it right (check out humanure on the internet for good instructions – he talks about composting human waste, which you may or may not like, but also has a great section on 3 bin composting).
