When we recall the time of past few years, we remember how the economy was too hard to maintain for any person. Even during these days at present we are aware about the recession period that world suffered or we can say still all bad things going own. So going back to past, it was a major concern to think about the resources we can conserve and resources we can utilize for free. The first amongst all which stroked the minds of people was solar energy. It’s a free source of energy and easy to utilize by just investing few dollars. In fact if you build solar panels at home then it’s nearly free for you and life time energy saving. This is the best way to help mankind. And in every house of America or even other nations, this was completely observed and proved as a fact.

First of all what is a DIY kit? It’s actually a ready made type of panel but not much costly. You just need it to buy from market as per your requirements. Then you can have a view at its instruction guide which will be provided along with the kit. You can follow the steps and easily install it at your home.

Now if you will get one for your home, you will surely doubt some questions about its installation like what should the facing position of your panel? It won’t affect the panel too much but if you want to get max out of it, then try to set it in some west position. That may be south west or north west. East can be also a good position to install as sun rises from the same. Similarly you will have to look for the obstacles. By obstacles here, I mean the shadow caused by tall trees or buildings on your roof. It has to be looked for whole year or full season and not only for the time and day you will install it. It will surely affect the energy utilization from sun. It’s a good plan for you if you are staying in the house for many more years, because it may or may not affect the resale value of your house and if it will affect, hopefully in the positive manner for you. Also many people think that if they will build solar panels at home, it won’t work for them, and then you can even go for a ready made kit which you can join and install by yourself.

Lastly what is a ready made solar panel? This is easiest of all but of course the costliest one too. You just need to buy a solar panel from market. A technician will come to your home wand will check for the available positions to fix it. Then a team will visit your home with the panels and install it. The thing you have to do is just sit back and relax.

Hope the article has let you understand the benefits of renewable sources of energy like solar energy. So go for it and help saving environment and contribute towards mankind. This is not only for the people earning handsome money but people with a bound budget can also build solar panels at home and contribute their part along with the money saving for their future.

Completely “roughing it” in the outdoors might become something of a thing of the past, if you choose to use solar camping gear during a trip.

It is a proven fact that sunlight contains around 1,000 watts of power per square meter. If you can harness that energy, your life can be made a lot easier - without the need of bringing extra weight to fuel your electrical or electronic devices. During camping trips, you normally want to bring only the essential items. Too much additional weight can be quite a burden to you.

The free energy of the sun can be used in several items. You might use one or two solar-powered devices, or your campsite can be surrounded with solar camping gear.

These items are often lightweight, and portable enough to be carried. These include radios, camp lanterns, flashlights, and AM/FM radios. The gadgets have their own photovoltaic cells, which gather energy from the sun.

For devices which don't have their own solar cells, you can use a separate solar charger to power the device.

What is a Photovoltaic Cell?

A photovoltaic cell is made up of a nonconductor, with one side coated with metal atoms that produce electrons when they are exposed to the sun. The other side of the PV cell is coated with negative electron atoms. If you connect a wires, from each side of the cell, to a device, current will flow when the positive side is exposed to sunlight.

The downside of using a photovoltaic cell is that it can be less efficient than other types of power. A small solar panel can can only power equipment which doesn't require a lot of power. What's more, when you’re outdoors, you can't always expect the weather to cooperate with you.

Chances are, you’ll experience bad days when the sun barely peeks out of the clouds. At times like these you’re solar-powered gadgets will not work. This is the reason why majority of these solar-powered camping gear feature additional energy sources, such as batteries, hand crank dynamos, or the option to charge them from a wall socket when available. There are even solar chargers that can recharge your AA batteries, so that you can later use them to run your small electronics.

Some people enjoy camping in RVs. Solar power can be used to charge the RV’s batteries. Photovoltaic cells can be discreetly placed on the dashboard.

There are people who like to take hot baths, even in the wild. A solar shower can be used for this task.

Or, by using a solar cooker, you can have hot meals without risking a forest fire.

As you can see, solar camping gear can make your outdoor life a bit easier and help you to enjoy nature even more – without doing additional damage to the environment you are camping in.

While a complete solar electrical system for the home usually requires a considerable investment, there are still other solar power solutions which are much easier to implement.

Solar lights are relatively simple to acquire and install, and are powered by clean energy. Since they usually require no wiring, they are very simple to set up.

Solar garden lights (or solar landscape lights) are one example of this. Solar garden lights have solar panels embedded into them at the top, facing the sun. Of course one drawback of these is that they might not stay lit forever. The amount of sun they receive will influence how long they last. The specifications of these lights can give you some idea of how long they will stay lit in the dark. But 8-12 hours is not an unusual estimate for a reasonably priced light, which should be plenty of time to get through the night in most circumstances.

Furthermore, these lights usually have sensors so that they turn on automatically at dusk and turn off when the sun starts shining again. This means that you don't have to run your lights the whole night through, if you don't need to. Motion sensors are also used in some solar lights, such as those that would be placed along pathways or near the front door, so that the lights turn on when an person or animal is present. This is good for security, and its also good for just seeing where you are going when you walk in a garden or path, or approach a home in the dark.

Solar lighting can also be used in Christmas lights. One might not think that December is the best time of year to utilize solar energy, but I suppose Christmas lights don't require too much voltage. Since solar powered Christmas lights are not hard to find.

Solar powered spotlights and floodlights are used in gardens and landscaping, among other things. These are used to set out and highlight the best features of a garden or landscape, and again, no wiring required means they are much easier to install than electrical lights. Not to mention cleaner and cheaper.

Again, with solar powered lights, one disadvantage can be the fact that they only stay on for as long as their stored solar electricity permits. In most cases, however, they should last throughout the night if they are receiving sufficient solar energy during the day. You could run into trouble if they are placed in a shady area or if you live in a cloudy climate. They will probably still work, but not as well. Snow can also block sunlight when it covers any photovoltaic surface. But solar lights are often sloped in such a way as to let snow fall off of them more easily.

There are plenty of other uses for solar lighting. And they aren't all for the home owner.

Street lights can be run with solar power. It will be interesting to see how that concept develops, as the world turns its attention more and more toward clean alternative energy solutions. Admittedly, it would be dangerous if street lights went out early, on days when the power of the sun wasn't sufficient.

But a simple solution would be to use a hybrid system, with a backup battery, a backup power generator, or the like. That way, if the energy from the sun weren't sufficient one day, the lights would continue to shine nevertheless.

For more information on Solar Lighting and how it works, see this article on Solar Lights

With oil prices moving higher and higher, power costs tend to follow the same trend. Given that our daily life depends very much on the consumption of electricity, getting your power from alternative sources is an attractive option.

The sun, water, and even wind are possible sources of energy. What's more, they are renewable sources of energy as they are constantly present in our environment. More and more people now care to set-up their own windmill at their homes. With the many instructions to build a windmill available out there, it is up to you to find the one that is easy to comprehend.

Here are some simple instructions to build a windmill:

Basically, there are several distinct types of windmills, based on the direction their blades rotate:

1. The Horizontal upwind, where the wind hits the blade before the tower and the shaft stands horizontally;

2. The Horizontal downwind where the wind hits the tower prior to the blade; and

3. The Vertical Axis, mounted on short towers and its blades are pointing upwards.

Essentially, a windmill has four componants that must be given extra attention:

- base
- tower
- blades
- nacelle

In building this structure, the main objective is to maximize the conversion of the wind's power into electricity. Therefore, it should be tall enough to take advantage of the wind's action in obstructed terrains - an average tower usually stands at 5 feet.

The base must be strong and heavy compared with other parts, to ensure a sturdy structure because it is the main foundation. It is advisable to use materials like sandbags or concrete, and in the case of a five-foot windmill, the base must be at least 18 inches square thick and 20 pounds heavy.

The tower supports the blade in capturing wind energy. There are many approaches when building it. You can either use guyed lattice or steel and pipe tubings or make them using a jin pole or crane.

The nacelle connects the blade to the tower and contains copper wires and magnets that run the blade and help convert the wind's energy to electricity.

The blade is the propeller used to capture the wind's energy, so it is necessary that the blades are able to gather the flow of the wind easily, turning with the least potential resistance.

Materials to be used for these parts must be lightweight, so you can carve them from plastic or PVC pipes. Note that in strong winds and storms, the blades can pose a danger if separated from the structure, so be sure to lock in the blades securely, keeping safety precautions in mind.

Considering that a simple windmill could cost at least $40,000, constructing one for personal use can be quite expensive, but utilizing what is around you can help you save some expenses.

It is thus recommended to recycle parts in order to reduce your expenses. Following these simple instructions to build a windmill will enable you to create one from scratch.

You might want to consider installing a Residential Solar Electric System for your house to start saving money and lock in electricity rates for the future.

In today’s rough economic times, it is often difficult to see your way to spending money. But if you have $20,000 in a 401(k) that has just lost half its value, what is the point in saving if you are not sure of the outcome? By investing in Solar Photo Voltaic Systems, you are reducing risk and locking in your rate of return. For home systems with large utility rebates, Solar Electric Systems can be bought for as little as $3.50 per watt final cost to the landlord .

The average retail cost of a Residential Solar PV System in Colorado is somewhere between $8 and $9 per watt. Many people cannot afford this type of cost, and it is still much more expensive then what they get from the grid now. In order to make solar feasible, the initial costs must be offset. This is done in many ways. For the individual landlord there is a federal tax credit of 30% of whatever you paid for the system. For many Americans, this credit is larger than the total tax they owe, so anything they paid to the IRS for that year will be given back to them when they file their income taxes.

Another major subsidy comes from the electric companies, assuming they are big enough to be regulated. For those living in rural areas, many of these types of subsidies are much smaller in amount, or do not exist at all. For major carriers, such as XCEL or Black Hills, there are two types of incentives that are paid to the landlord . The first is usually about $2 per watt and is supposed to help defray the cost of equipment installation .

The second incentive offered by the electric companies is the purchase of your “green tags”, which you earn because you have installed a renewable source of energy . This is directly related to the issues of cap and trade and forcing companies to pay tax on carbons, making your green tags worth more money. Generally, the electric companies like to purchase the green tags from the landlord at installation, thus getting the assumed lower price.

Is a Residential Solar Electric System right for you? With today’s rebates, the uncertainty of the stock market and continuous utility price increases, you would be crazy not to spend money you have saved on a Residential Solar PV System

Many folks need to know if theywill save money if they install solar energy panels. Solar energy panels cost quite a bit and folk need to know if the investment will pay off in the end. There are some different ways to have a look at that question. One way to respond to this question is to think about the environmental price of using other methods for manufacturing power. Another is to take a look at the cost of the solar cells themselves and work out how long it would probably take for lower household bills to pay off the panels.

The cost of solar cells continues to get go down in reply to advancements in technology and increased demand. The price you pay for electricity , however , just continues to rise. Today you may find a variety of state programs offering tax credits to folk who install renewable energy in their houses. This can really lower the price tag it will pay to install solar cells. There are several things which do into determining the cost of your solar cells. Learn more about solar paneling.

A few of these factors include things like the guaranty period, the full amount of electricity the unit is capable of producing, and the brand. Although everyone wish to pay as little as possible you want to look at more than price when you're selecting cheap solar energy panels. When selecting solar panels one thing you want to be certain to look at is how long you can expect the system to last. One thing that can offer you an idea of this is the length of the warranty period. Try and stay with brands that supply a twenty to twenty 5 year guaranty. This permits you to know that you may expect at least that many years from them.

The dimensions of the unit will also impact the final cost of the unit. The simplest way to compare costs for the different types of solar energy panels is by knowing the dollars per watt. The power output for a solar cell is measured in watts. The more watts a panel produces the bigger itwill be. Select a solar energy panel system which can produce enough watts to meet your requirements.

This article details how solar energy can be used to heat water in your home, and sets out the main types of residential solar power systems available.

I also have provided some videos with additional information on how solar power works.

In residential homes, a solar hot water installation will consist of solar panels that collect the sun’s energy, and a system to move the heat from the solar collector to a tank where it can be store and put to use.

Solar panels are usually placed on the roof of a building but they can be placed anywhere as long as the location will provide maximum sunlight to be collected by the panels so they can make solar power.

Solar hot water systems can utilize direct sunlight as well as defused sunlight. This means the sunlight doesn’t need to be shining directly on your collector all the time in order to heat your water.

There are two different kinds of solar hot water systems.

The first is a compact system, and is simpler to install and more basic in design (and therefore cheaper) but is less efficient in collecting the sun's energy and does not work well with cold weather.

The second is an active system, which is more expensive and more complex, but more efficient and better able to cope with colder climates

In a passive system, there is no external energy input such as electricity to pump water around.

The first type of passive system is an integral collector. In this type the water tank is both the storage place for hot water and the place that collects the sunlight to heat it.

It is basically a large water tank generally located on the roof of a house where and the water inside it is heated by sunshine.

Another type of passive system is the Thermosyphon.

With these kinds of systems the water tank is installed above the collector panels. Warm water rises after being heated and cold water sinks back into the collecting panels.

This is an a cheap and reliable solution as long as you live in a sunny location.

Active systems pump and control the hot water, and generally use electricity to do so.

You can install some solar panels to make solar power generate the electricity required to operate your system. These systems are generally a lot more cost effective and better able to cope with cold weather.

In active systems, the tank is located inside the building and liquid is pumped from the solar energy collection panels to the tank as it heats up.

The vast majority of these systems are a closed loop, which means that they require a heat exchange.

This requires that the solar panel system and the fluid in it is fully closed, and the water in the tank is not heated directly by the sunshine but the heat is transferred from the fluid heated by the sun into the water in the tank.

This has advantages, as antifreeze can be put in the closed loop, and this lessens the risk of lime scale and other substances caking up in the closed loop system as the fluid is not continuously replaced.

One form of alternative energy you can use in cooling your home is geothermal energy. This might sound surprising, but you can use the energy found in your own backyard by utilizing geothermal heat pumps. You can save up to 70% on cooling bills.

The bad news is that professionally installed geothermal systems are too expensive. The good news is that there are ways in which you can harness geothermal energy, to partially cool your house, without shelling out a fortune for it.

You might already be utilizing geothermal energy without realizing it. Homeowners in norther states often use this renewable energy without, their direct knowledge.

This article will teach you how to maximize the cool air that's stored within your basement.

You need to have a basement, or at least some crawl space beneath your home, for this cooling method to work. You must be able to access the space from within the confines of your home. If the space has a small window or vent, this will help with the air flow. You will also need a small portable fan for this one.

The principle of geothermal cooling works in this way. During hot summer days, the basement is cooler than most parts of the house. The basement's exterior walls are controlled by the constant heat trapped a few feet underground, right beside the house's foundation. The temperature penetrates the basement walls and cools the air trapped inside. You must then distribute the cool from this musty and damp air, throughout the rest of home.

The most efficient way of doing so is to cover your windows with shades or curtains during sunrise, to minimize the natural heating by the sun. During nighttime when the outside temperature falls below 75 degrees, open your upstairs windows while leaving your fan on, to suck in the cool air.

But, once the temperature get higher than 75 degrees, you can turn on your geothermal cooling system by opening one of the windows in the basement. You don't need to fully open it. A small opening is enough just to let some air through. Be sure to close all other windows in your house except for one. That way, air flows through the open windows. The open window should be the highest one in your house. This will vent out the most hot air.

Your small fan should be turned on and should point toward the window. This should make the air from the basement move up to the open window, and let the hot air go out. It usually takes between thirty minutes to one hour to circulate the cool air from the basement to the rest of the house.

This method of utilizing geothermal energy might seem to involve lots of work, but your family will benefit from it in the long run. You'll see your dependency on your air conditioner decrease, resulting in lower energy bills.

A solar power inverter forms an important part of any home solar energy system which supplies enough electricity to get you off the grid.

The inverter converts direct current, which is produced by a solar panel, into alternating current.

There is also a charge controller, which can use excess power to charge your system's battery, and provide energy without any waste.

In some cases, solar power might be your best solution, if you want to get your home running off the grid. It is also relatively simple to install, and doesn't require a large quantity of parts and components, in order to produce electricity.

Each system is different, but generally speaking, all you need is:

Your wiring

A set of solar panels

A battery to store electricity in

A solar regulator or charge controller

Solar panels usually produce 12 to 24 volts DC. Some appliances can run on this power, but most home appliances require 110 or 220 volts AC.

This is where a solar power inverter is needed. It converts the direct current into alternating current.

What is direct current? Direct current, or DC, flows continuously in one direction, while alternating current changes in its direction of flow.

Alternating current (AC) is used because it is a type of electricity which can be carried over longer distances, with minimal energy loss . Oddly enough, however, most household appliances have built in devices which convert the AC into DC, in order to operate.

Various types of solar inverters can be found on the market currently. You might come across some which are pretty cheap. But keep in mind that these might be inferior in quality. Some inverters get warmer when in use – and that heat adds up to a loss of energy.

Different solar inverters use different “loads,” as well. The “load” is the amount of current or energy that the inverter can handle. For home use, you might want to get a solar inverter that can handle a couple of hundred watts, at any given time. These aren't always cheap, but they will be worthwhile in the long run.

Possibly the best choice of solar inverter is the true sine wave. This type of inverter produces power identical to what you would receive from the main supply grid. When viewed on an oscilloscope, the waves are smooth.

If the true sine wave is beyond your budget, you might settle for a modified sine wave. This gives a lesser quality power than the true sine wave does, but is less expensive.

Getting Completely Off the Grid

If you are looking to get your home running off the grid completely, then get a “stand-alone power system inverter.” With this type of device, you plug the deep cycle batteries in - and it can be installed by virtually anyone.

You can also get a “mains grid inverter,” which draws power from your solar panels, and at the same time feeds excess energy back to the main grid. In some states, you can earn money back from the power companies when you produce excess power and feed it back to the grid.

Installing a Solar Power System in Your Home

When installing a partial or complete solar energy system into your home, there are generally two ways to go about it.

1.Hire a professional installation company to install your system

2.Do it yourself.

The least expensive choice is the latter – do-it-yourself.

There are many high-quality and popular do-it-yourself guides available, which will teach you how to install your own solar power or wind power system at home. These guides often include manuals, instructional videos, diagrams, and step-by-step instructions.
