Ban Incandescents?

This may be old news to those of you paying better attention, but Australia appears to be banning incandescent light bulbs in favor of CFLs.

But, of course, any attempts to do something similar is bound to get met with ridicule here in the states. Because, you know, taking away the freedom to chose what kind of bulb to use in your light sockets is tantamount to pissing on the Constitution. Or some such nonsense.

  1. I do think banning a single kind of bulb might be a bad idea, a better idea would just be to say “no bulbs of any kind over X watts can be sold after Y date” then you are not telling people what bulb to buy, just which ones are illegal to buy. If they can find a way to make incandescent bulbs that use say 20 watts of power and provide good light go to town.

Also every mandatory CFL implementation must be accompanied by a mandatory CFL recycling program and mercury education campaign. People have to know that CFL’s have mercury and that they need to be recycled to be safe (hence they need some place to recycle them).

    Thanks for the link :)

  2. Wow, should check in a bit more often – totally missed your comment Naib…

‘No bulb over X watts’ is a decent presentation of the idea, though methinks it’d results in the same effect. I doubt there’s a way to physically get an equivalent number of lumens from an incandescent than from CFL or LED technology. But if it makes it more palatable to put it forth that way, I’m all for it… ;)
