5 Tray – Compost Worm Bin System – The Worm Factory®

Product Description
Worm composting is an incredibly efficient way to convert kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost for your garden. But sorting out the undigested scraps can be messy and inconvenient. The Worm Factory automatically separates food scraps from finished compost. Simply fill the bottom tray with red wiggler worms, bedding and food scraps. As the worms finish digesting, they will migrate upward into the tray above, leaving rich castings behind. In full operation, the Worm Factory houses 10,000 to 12,000 worms, consumes 5 to 8 pounds of food a day, allowing you to harvest a full try of castings per month. Each Worm Factory comes with full instructions to get you started. The Worm Factory is made in the U.S.A., cons... More >>

  1. This is not what you wish to order as product has many flaws, for example the product sends you two nuts …it requires 4 instead of 2…I ordered 2 pounds of worms with this system…1 pound came …you know how you see something you want on Amazon and you click buy, well the ad I saw said two pounds of worms and clicked on it …and in my happiness to order …I didn’t look to see that in the final sale it said 1 pound of worms …so be aware…you will speak to Ralph if you send a letter of complaint and he will not work with you…as he will tell you he is a man of principle and take offense if you are upset at being shorted…I see here as they offer 1 pound of worms …probably you will receive 1/2 pound of worms but I may be wrong …bottom line make sure you buy a book on raising worms before you order this system as worms do not crawl up well as this system suggests…I am going to go outside and dig down and bury blocks mortared about 6 foot down a6x6x6 and put my worms in there …I will never order from these folks again…as they refuse to work with you if you are unhappy …in order to be fair he did suggest I could order another pound of worms at his cost…or he would give me a deal on more of his product at 6 dollars a bin as they where used and shipping …duh why buy more of a product that doesn’t work well, while I am a unhappy customer here there may have been a honest mistake on the part of this company do not know, but do know they will not work with you…unfortunatly they do not make a lower rating so a 1 star was given to this product…I have probably bought many items on Amazon and have always been happy with the product I received …or Amazon made me happy…this is my first time to be shorted and not resolved…but friends do not blame Amazon on this one …Cascade Sales…did not make me happy…if you order please be aware …I have taken the time to warm you …

  3. I bought this, and then added 3 more trays to the 5 tray model. So stuff is composted for 8 months– I harvest the compost once a month.

    Pros–

    * Everything is composted within 8 months.

    * “Turning” the mixture involves taking off the bottom tray, emptying it out, and putting th tray on top– easy!

    * it’s compact, and goes into a shady part of the garden

    * I can feed ‘em my shredded reciepts, used facial tissues, kitchen scraps, and garden waste. I produce a lot less trash.

    Cons–

    * On most of the trays have at least one of the corners have cracked

    * In So. Cal., you have to watch out for the bin to get too hot. You don’t want to cook your worms!

    * The spigot frequently gets clogged– I use a high pressure sprayer every so often.

    * you obviously have to get some worms. Fortunately, there are garden shops around SD that sell bags of live worms for vermiculture.

All in all, it’s a great thing for a gardener to have.

  4. This composter has a fatal flaw—because the trays rest on the compost instead of each other, they tend to compact the compost so that the worms do not get the air they need to work—they will hover on the edge, and finally die. I got four pieces of 4″ plastic pipe for each tray. These hold the tray so that enough air reaches the worms. The size seems good, and the materials rather sturdy. The faucet tends to drip—use plumbers tape, and keep it open with a bucket under it. Otherwise the drip tray will run over.

  5. I researched bins extensively and went with this one–bought it directly from the company. I did not order worms with it–I got some extra red wrigglers from another person’s worm bin when they did their harvest. We’ve been going great now for about 8 months. Yes, the worms do not seem to migrate up all that well on their own, but that seems to be the reality for all upward-migration worm bin systems, not just this one. But a decent percentage of them do migrate upwards. Here’s what I do in addition: when I harvest the castings from the bottom tray and/or when starting a new tray on top, I simply pick out the worms left in the completed worm castings in the bottom tray and add them to the new upper tray. But the system would likely work fine without this step–it’s just that I hate to leave any worms in the castings when I could keep using them to eat the kitchen garbage!

When I brought the bin into the kitchen a few times over the summer when it got very hot out, there was no odor whatsoever created by having it in the kitchen. A fine, easy-to-use, tidy system for a family.

Also, I had great service from the business owner/creator of this system (which, by the way, is made in the USA, unlike many other worm bin systems). 1 tray arrived with a small crack, and we chatted by phone and he immediately had a new tray shipped to me, no problem. He seemed like a good guy.
